Lately I talked about the #1 source for website visitors - search engine traffic - and how it would be a big mistake to ignore the search engines.
And I still hold by that, but…
Did you know that there is another way to get listed on Google and get noticed by people who are actively searching for what your business has to offer?
And, it’s a way that does NOT require as much time and effort as organic search engine traffic:
Google My Business (or GMB for short).
You’re probably familiar with the map view on searches. They look like this:
The businesses listed in the map view all have a GMB listing. This listing allows users to find local businesses nearby. You may be thinking that this kind of listing is all well and good for restaurants and hair salons but doesn’t necessarily apply to your business. A business that doesn’t maintain a location where your customers come to you to get the products and/or services you provide. Well nothing could be further from the truth. You see, a Google My Business listing can work for any business that takes care of the needs of customers in your local area. |
For example: If you look up “piano tuning calgary” you will find a whole lot of businesses listed in the map view.
Let’s face it, for a piano tuning business, clients can’t just stuff their piano into their car and take it to a nearby shop for tuning. No.
Instead, they have to get a business to come to their location to tune their piano. It can’t work any other way.
Same goes for lots of businesses: Tree service, housecleaning, landscaping, roofing, septic tank cleaning. The list goes on and on.
If you have a service-type business, you will benefit from having a listing that shows up in the map view for keyword searches that pertain to the services you provide.
There are a number of good reasons why you should consider having a Google My Business listing. But here’s just a few to consider:
Google My Business doesn’t charge a cent for setting up or maintaining a listing.
And get this:
Even a business that doesn’t have a website can set up a listing. Heck they don’t have to be on any social media either!
That’s pretty cool because it allows tech-shy businesses to be searchable on Google without even having the bother of setting up and managing any other online assets(like websites and social media accounts).

- It’s a great way for customers to get in touch with you.
- It’s also a great way for customers to leave a review.
- The tools associated with an active listing helps you get to know what makes your client base tick. That’s valuable insight!

And I’ll tell you, there are lots of businesses without websites that are doing just that! Check out these near the top of the GMB listing for “janitorial services Edmonton”:
If they can do it without a website, than you can too, whether you have a business website or not.
But…
But…
In order to reap the full benefits from your listing, you have to set it up properly. You can’t just slap your listing together in 10 minutes and call it done. No.
Instead, you need to do a thorough job of it. Which includes taking a good, long look at what your competitors are doing on their listings.
Because just like anything else associated with Google, the businesses listed on top of the map view are the ones that will see the most action from their potential customers. You want to be at the top!
So what you need to do is see what your competition is doing with their listings and then you want to do the same…only more so.
More description, more images, more postings and more reviews (if you have them). Just getting your listing as thorough as you can goes a long way.

Well…not exactly.
There’s just one more thing to make your Google My Business listing really take off and rise above your competition:
Business citations.
Business citations are the online mentions of your business’s name, address and phone number (aka “NAP”).
You get citations by listing your business in directories that show your NAP.
Citation directories all have a numerical code of influence attached to them. This code tells Google how influential that directory is, and how important are the businesses listed on that directory.
Guess which directory has the highest rating?
Google. Followed closely by Facebook, Bing, etc.
So all the major players are really great to get your business NAP listed on in order to make your listing rise to the top – as well as your website, incidentally.
But also, sheer volume of citations plays an important part too. Especially when it comes to GMB listings.
So while checking out your competition, you should check out how many citations they have.
Not sure how to go about that?
We can help.
In fact, we can also help you with the whole GMB/Citation thing.
